Russia declared its battleship “remains afloat,” after a fire exploded weapons on board:
Russia declared its battleship “remains afloat,” prompting contradicting accounts from Russian and Ukrainian officials.
The guided-missile cruiser Moskva “The main missile armament has not been damaged”. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated in a statement on Thursday, adding that “no open fire has occurred”. Ammunition explosions have been halted.”
“The source of ignition aboard the cruiser Moskva has been pinpointed”. The ministry stated, adding that the origin of the incident on the Black Sea fleet’s flagship was still being investigated.
Maxim Marchenko, Ukraine’s regional administrator for the Odesa state, said in a Telegram message on Wednesday that Ukrainian soldiers fired “Neptune” missiles at the ship, causing major damage.
The Moskva was also damaged by Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missiles, according to Ukraine’s Operational Command South.
The cruiser Moskva, the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s flagship, was attacked by Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles in the Black Sea operational zone, causing considerable damage, according to the statement. “There was a fire. Other ships in the group attempted to assist, but the cruiser was toppled by a storm and a tremendous explosion of munitions. And it began to sink.”
According to Russian official media, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated Wednesday that the battleship Moskva was evacuated after a fire aboard exploded ordnance, severely damaging the vessel.
“We can’t figure out what happened,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s adviser Oleksiy Arestovych stated, implying bewilderment over what transpired.
The “crew of the cruiser was evacuated to ships of the Black Sea Fleet in the region,” according to the Russian ministry’s statement on Thursday, and preparations were being taken to bring the cruiser to port.
There was no mention of casualties in the Russian statement.
CNN has not been able to visually confirm the ship has been hit because to heavy storms over the Black Sea obscuring satellite pictures and sensory satellite data.
However, analysts who talked to CNN stated that a fire on board such a ship may result in a catastrophic explosion that could sink it. And that it would be similar to the US Navy losing a battleship during World War II or an aircraft carrier today in terms of national pride.
The Moskva is a missile cruiser that was built and commissioned in 1982, according to the Defense Ministry.
