Elections 2022: Black and Asian voters encouraged

Black and Asian

This month, more young black and Asian people are being asked by community leaders to vote, and they want more of them to do so.

The group Citizens Cymru Wales said that not having a voice and not having faith in the government has led to lower voter registration rates.

“A lot of young people are still quite disenfranchised from local politics and don’t really know or have a say in decisions that affect them,” said Nirushan Sudarsan, of the group.

Since February, the group has made more efforts to get people to sign up.

Mr. Sudarsan said councils played a “huge role” in many areas, including education, social care, health, and housing.”

It’s really important that any decisions that people in power make, that young people’s voices are at the forefront of that and that they do feel that their voices and the votes are valuable in shaping and influencing them,” added Mr. Sudarsan.

More than one in four black and Asian people who could vote in the UK were not registered to do so, and that number rose to almost a third for people of mixed heritage. The Electoral Commission said this in 2019.

As of 2020, 16- and 17-year-olds could vote for the first time in the Senedd elections of 2021 for the first time.

Citizens Cymru Wales says it is a group of groups working for social justice.

Members have been holding workshops to get more people from black and Asian communities to vote in the May elections this year, and they want more people to do so.
