Aiden Aslin, a Nottinghamshire native who relocated to Ukraine in 2018, has been fighting in Ukraine’s military ever since. His regiment just defended the beleaguered city of Mariupol, which has been shelled by Russia.
When his family asked him about surrendering to Russian forces, the family of a British soldier in Ukraine claimed he had already told them that.
It was his mother Ang Wood’s account of the conversation that her son had with her.
In an interview with the BBC, she claimed, “He called and said they had no weapons left to fight.”
He is my hero since they fought so hard. I adore my son so much.”
His name is Aslin, and he is a former care worker who served alongside Kurdish forces in Syria in their fight against ISIS.
Now that he’s engaged to a Ukrainian woman, he may claim dual nationality.
After speaking with Ms. Wood, she noted that although her son “sounded OK,” greater help for Ukraine should be provided by the UK government
In her words, “Boris [Johnson] needs to take down [Vladimir] Putin.”
Aslin’s buddy Brennan Philips, who also spoke to him on the phone, described him as “strong and in high spirits,” per the New York Times.
Then he contacted me and said, “We’re fully encircled; we’re out of food, supplies, and ammo; we have to surrender.”
The author writes, “Aiden remained cool and collected throughout the entire ordeal.”
In the absence of an escape route or means of retaliation, they had no choice but to resort to lethal force.
