ISLAMABAD: Newly-elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said Pakistan desired peaceful and cooperative relations with India.
He said this in response to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tweet, in which the latter congratulated the former. Shehbaz Sharif thanked Modi for felicitations.
Shehbaz reminded his Indian counterpart that peaceful settlement of outstanding disputes including Jammu and Kashmir was indispensable.

“Pakistan’s sacrifices in fighting terrorism are well-known. Let’s secure peace and focus on socio-economic development of our people,” he tweeted while responding to the Indian PM’s wish for “peace and stability in the region free of terror”.

Shehbaz Sharif was on Tuesday given guard of honour at the Prime Minister House as he assumed the responsibilities of his office.
PM Shehbaz Sharif reviewed the guard of honour as the contingents of the armed forces presented salute to him.
The prime minister was introduced to the officials and staff of the PM House.
Shehbaz Sharif was sworn-in as the country’s 23rd prime minister a day earlier after he won a no-confidence vote from the National Assembly against his predecessor Imran Khan. Acting President and Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani had administered the oath.
In a series of tweets, Shehbaz Sharif has congratulated people on peaceful transition of power. He said it was a matter of pride that all our institutions respected the constitution as a guiding principle.

The prime minister said if stock market and strengthening currency was any indication, the journey towards our goals had already started.
He said the government also looked forward to keep building relationships with other countries on the basis of mutual respect, equality and peace.
Shehbaz Sharif said the government’s focus was on providing as much relief as possible to all Pakistanis by tackling high inflation and kick-starting the stagnant economy.
