On the fourth day of the second Test against Bangladesh at Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer bowled South Africa to a comfortable 332-run victory.
Bangladesh were bowled out for 80 runs at St George’s Park, losing their remaining seven wickets in under an hour.
After a 220-run victory in the first Test in Durban last week, it completed a 2-0 series victory.
Maharaj, a left-arm spinner, grabbed 7-40, while Harmer, an off-spinner, took 3-34.
After taking 7-32 in the first Test, Maharaj claimed his second seven-wicket haul in as many matches.
After both Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder tested positive for Covid-19, South Africa was obliged to make two changes before of the day’s play.
Since the International Cricket Council decided in June 2020 to allow substitutes in Test matches for players who test positive for coronavirus, Khaya Zondo and Glenton Stuurman were the first Covid replacements in Test cricket.
Zondo earned his maiden Test cap, despite the fact that he was unable to bat because both South African innings had been completed. Stuurman, who had one previous appearance under his belt, was not selected to bowl.
Bangladesh resumed play on 27-3, needing 413 runs to win, and lost three wickets in the opening half-hour, including one after only eight balls.
Liton Das batted well, hitting 27 and sharing a 25-run stand with Mehidy Hasan, before being stumped by Kyle Verreynne as he leapt down the wicket against Maharaj.
In the space of seven balls, the final three wickets fell.
