IHC rejects plea to seek probe into alleged threat letter

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday rejected the petition seeking a probe into the alleged threat letter and to place the name of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on the Exit Control List (ECL).

As per details, Chief Justice Athar Minallah, while delivering the verdict, maintained that the petitioner had tried to make the cable controversial.

Not only this, the court has also fined the petitioner Rs 100,000 which has to be submitted within 15 days.

Petitioner Maulvi Iqbal Haider in his plea has requested the court to put the names of former prime minister, former federal ministers namely, Fawad Chaudhry, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri and Pakistani diplomat Asad Majeed on the ECL and order for initiating proceedings of a treason case by a trial court against them unless the ‘lettergate’ issue was investigated.

The CJ remarked during the hearing that it is the responsibility of the state to investigate it and questioned the petitioner about why he was politicizing the matter and what was his request to the court.

It is pertinent to mention here that on March 27, former Prime Minister Imran Khan waved a letter in front of a public gathering claiming it to be a threat letter against his government received from a foreign country.

Imran Khan named the United States to be behind the conspiracy to topple his government in Pakistan.
