Women’s Tests are on the minds of the International Cricket Council (ICC) members who are going to discuss about women’s test in Dubai meeting this week.
Although the International Cricket Council is unlikely to start a WWTC – Women’s World Test Championship –at the moment, there will be discussions on how to bring the traditional format. The ICC will also talk on if there is a serious case for extending the duration to five days.
“No, there can’t be a WWTC, but the discussions will be more about the role of Test cricket for women,” said an ICC member, who is playing a major role in the initiative and will also be attending the meetings that will be held in Dubai on April 10.
If we go back in past, only 15 Tests were played between 2005 and 2016 between women players. “It probably opens the channel to have another format added in the bilateral series and that clearly will help the overall standard of women’s cricket,” Mithali Raj, one of the most successful women cricketers in the world, said before the India-England Test in Bristol last June. While talking to bcci.tv, Harmanpreet Kaur said, “It is a great feeling. Playing a Test match is a dream. I want to play many Test matches in my life and I hope we will continue this
There has been news about women’s test cricket and how players are wishing for test crickets to be held again but the most of the members of the global administrators are not in favor of organizing more test cricket for women. Also the broadcasters and bank rollers prefer the format of the game to be short.
The length of the Tests will be discussed too. There’s a debate if the duration should be five days, just like for the men. “So, it’s a subject about the role of women’s Tests in the overall development of the game. We will also see if the members want five-day or four-day Tests,” the ICC member said.
