President Joe Biden’s sister and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi became the latest Washington leaders to test positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, after some cabinet officials tested positive the day before.
Pelosi, who has had no symptoms, was found to be positive on Thursday. Her spokeswoman stated that she will be quarantined.
“The speaker has been properly vaccinated and boosted, and is grateful for the strong protection afforded by the vaccine,” spokesman Drew Hammill said.
Pelosi attended a crowded White House event where Biden spoke on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Biden’s encounters with Pelosi, according to the White House, do not match the criteria of “close contact” as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the White House, Biden was recently tested on Wednesday as part of his routine testing and came up negative.
This week, Pelosi became the ninth member of Congress to test positive. The members had all been completely vaccinated and boosted.
Following Pelosi’s diagnosis, a planned visit to Asia by lawmakers, which Pelosi intended to lead, has been cancelled.
Valerie Biden Owens tested positive on Wednesday after having minor symptoms, according to her publisher. Owens had not maintained close contact with the president or first lady, he added.
Attorney General Merrick Garland and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris’ communications director Jamal Simmons, announced on Wednesday that they had tested positive.
Pelosi was not there for the event, but Hammill, her spokesman, was.
Biden did not attend the meal but spoke at a hotel ballroom event on Wednesday to almost 2,000 union leaders and members, the majority of whom were not wearing masks.
On Tuesday, he hosted a packed health-care event at the White House, and on Wednesday, he invited senators and others for a bill signing.
Biden, who is 79 years old, was vaccinated and received his first booster shot in September and his second at the end of March.
Furthermore, in order to safeguard Biden from the infection, the White House went above the CDC’s suggested precautions. Anyone who meets with the president or travels with him is subjected to a series of tests. According to White House press secretary Jen Psaki, Biden is kept socially separated from others whenever feasible.
Psaki stated on Wednesday, “We are living with COVID-19.” “We’re going to keep fighting it.”
