Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to retire after French Open conclusion

Former Australian Open runner-up and world number five Jo-Wilfried Tsonga announced on Wednesday that he will retire from tennis following this year’s French Open.

“A few weeks ago I decided I was going to stop at Roland Garros this year,” the 36-year-old Tsonga said in a video posted to social media.

“It took me a long time to make this decision,” the Frenchman added. “My body is telling me ‘you can’t go any further than what I give you’.”

Tsonga, an unseeded player, lost in the final of the 2008 Australian Open against Novak Djokovic, who went on to win the first of his 20 Grand Slam titles.

He reached the semi-finals of both the French Open and Wimbledon twice, and he finished second to Roger Federer at the 2011 ATP Finals.

Tsonga and Michael Llodra won Olympic silver in men’s doubles in London 2012, and he was a key member of France’s Davis Cup victory in 2017.

He also won two Masters championships, in 2008 in Paris and 2014 in Toronto.

His ranking has dropped to 220 as a result of his battles with a variety of injuries in recent years.

Last season, he only won one match on the circuit before retiring early after a first-round loss at Wimbledon.

Tsonga returned to action in February in Montpellier, with the goal of preparing for the end of his career.

“I decided that I had to stop at a moment that I chose, a moment when I was able to go on the court,” he said.

“I have always set myself high goals to try to get what I can. For me, this will be the opportunity to do it one last time.”
