Umar Sarfraz Cheema has taken the oath of Punjab Governor in Lahore.
The Chief Justice of Lahore High Court Muhammad Amir Bhutti administered the oath to him during a simple but dignified ceremony at the Governor’s House on Sunday.
Earlier, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has appointed him as the new Punjab Governor hours after Chaudhry Sarwar was relinquished his duties, confirmed Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry.
Cheema is a provincial leader of the ruling party from Punjab.
“The new governor of Punjab will be announced later. According to the constitution, the deputy speaker will be the acting governor (till then),” Fawad Chaudhry wrote in a tweet.
The announcement also came hours before a crucial session of the National Assembly on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan as well as a sitting of the Punjab Assembly to elect a new leader of the house following Usman Buzdar’s resignation.

Moreover, an hour before the commencement of national assembly session scheduled to vote on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan, in a surprising move, the opposition parties have submitted a vote of no-confidence against Speaker Asad Qaiser.
With the motion against him submitted in the National Assembly secretariat, Qaiser will not be constitutionally mandated to chair the session on no-confidence motion against PM Imran. The voting on no-confidence motion on Speaker will be held on the next assembly session.
