After years of incompatibility and reported extramarital relationships, Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s turbulent marriage ended in 1996.

When the divorce was finalised, Diana was deprived of her HRH titles at Charles’ request, despite the Queen’s desire for her to preserve them, according to the Daily Mirror.

Diana would now bow to her former husband, her sons, and other members of the Royal Family. The decision shocked the Princess, who was consoled by son William, who promised to return the title when he became King.

Paul Burrell, Diana’s former butler, discussed the mother-daughter interaction in his book ‘A Royal Duty.’

Diana, according to Mr. Burrell, was moved to tears by the talk, “Don’t worry Mummy, I will give it back to you one day when I am King.”

However, William’s pledge to restore Diana’s title was not kept when she died in a car accident a year later in 1997.
