A woman who had struggled to lose weight was shocked to learn that an ovarian tumour with hair and teeth was growing.
Jaimi Conwell had been trying to lose weight for years, experimenting with various diets such as low calorie and keto foods, as well as exercise.
Despite working out twice a day and eating a healthy diet, she was unable to lose weight and began to gain weight quickly.
Jaimi, a 28-year-old nurse from Texas, US, suspected something was wrong and went to see her doctor in March after experiencing some concerning symptoms.
“I’d bend over to tie my shoe and get nauseous, which I assumed was normal for bigger people,” she recalled.
“I had my blood count checked to ensure that everything was normal, and my white blood cells were abnormal.”
“I was put under anaesthesia, but I was with my mother, whom I designated as my proxy so she could make any decisions for me.”
“When the doctor arrived, he informed her that I had a massive tumour in my abdomen that had engulfed my right ovary.”
“He asked if it could be removed, and my mother agreed, so I had the tumour and my right ovary removed.”
“After I woke up, I took a walk with my mum and I could see the worry in her face, so I knew something wasn’t right.
“She told me about the tumour and that they were unsure if it was benign.
“I was in so much shock, that I can’t remember how I was thinking or feeling at the time.
“At one point though, I remember thinking: ‘Am I going to die? Did I even live the life I wanted to?’”
Although she was stunned, Jaimi agreed with the choice to remove her right ovary as multiple tests showed how dangerous the tumour was.
Because the tumour weighed 20 pounds, it is believed that it consumed all of the nutrients she was providing her body in order to grow.
“I was in shock,” Jaimi explained, “because that’s like having three kids inside of you.”
“[I was told] that it was also growing teeth, which came as a complete surprise to me.”
“It also grew hair, which was more disgusting to me than anything else.”
“They said it could be due to a variety of factors, including the fact that my mother, grandfather, and aunties are all twins, so perhaps I had a twin in my mother’s womb.”
“At first, I was devastated because I thought [having my right ovary removed] meant I couldn’t have children. All I’ve ever wanted was to have children and raise a large family.
“I was so depressed and crying all the time until I saw my OBGYN [Obstetrics and Gynecology] who assured me that all my hormones and eggs would be directed to my left ovary.”
“I shouldn’t have any trouble getting pregnant, but the thought of not being able to have children weighs heavily on my mind.”
She resumed her diet and exercise routine, eating protein shakes, fish, chicken, and salads, knowing that the tumour was most likely the reason she had failed to lose weight thus far.
She has lost 7st 5lbs and now weighs 10st 7lbs after a year.
Jaimi decided to share her weight loss journey on TikTok after her sister suggested she do so.
