Alaska has been hit by a 5-magnitude earthquake, according to the USGS, which confirms a tremor near Port Alsworth that was felt widely in Anchorage

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 has been reported near Anchorage, Alaska.

According to official reports, the tremor was felt in the state’s southcentral and southwest regions just before 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

The preliminary magnitude of the earthquake was 5.0.

According to the US Geological Survey, its epicentre was about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage and 42 miles northeast of Port Alsworth.

It was about 87 miles deep.

The Alaska Earthquake Center stated that it is investigating the event, but no injuries or damage have been reported thus far.

Residents in Alaska took to social media to report the situation.

According to one Twitter user: “In math class, there was an earthquake! What a blast! Alaska is my favourite state!”

Another was added: “Oh, that was a strange earthquake in Alaska… I’m trying not to lose my cool during a team call, but…”

Another 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck Alaska earlier this month.

According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, the quake occurred 33 miles southwest of Shemya Island and 52 miles southeast of Attu Station (AEC).

According to the AEC’s 2021 Seismicity Year in Review report, Alaska experienced an 8.2 magnitude earthquake in 2021, the largest in the United States in 50 years.

The quake struck on July 28 at 10:15 p.m. local time. It formed off the coast of the Alaska Peninsula.

Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued.
