Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton are expected to face even more protests as they travel to the Bahamas as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee tour of the Caribbean.
According to Express UK, a Bahamas-based organisation has issued a “response” to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s tour as they continue to meet with locals in Jamaica before heading to the Bahamas.
On March 22, the Bahamas National Reparations Committee (BNRC) issued a letter demanding “reparatory justice” from the British Crown for its “colonialist past.”
The BNRC lashed out in the letter at the fact that the people of the Bahamas have been footing the bill for the ‘extravagant’ royal tour.
“Why are we footing the bill for a regime whose rise to ‘greatness’ was fueled by the extinction, enslavement, colonisation, and degradation of this land’s people?” “Why are we being forced to pay again?” inquired the BNRC.
“In the words of Sir Hilary Beckles, Chair of the CARICOM Reparations Commission, colonialism was devastating, and we are tired of footing the bill,” the letter continued.
“We are tired of literally paying with our lives to maintain a paradigm in which we were exploited so that others could be exalted.” It is now time for reparatory justice. The time for restitution has arrived.”
The BNRC also claimed that Prince William and Kate are unlikely to apologise or address the issue during their upcoming visit, adding, “However, they can no longer ignore the devastation of their heritage.” They, their Royal family, and their government must recognise that their diverse economy was built on the backs of our forefathers. And then, they must pay.”
William and Kate are scheduled to visit the Bahamas on Thursday, March 24, and will stay for two days.
