The daughter of Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has posted a video of herself and her six-month-old daughter dressed in the colours of Ukraine’s flag, sparking outrage on social media.
Ksenia Shoigu, 31, has not expressed strong support for her father’s war and has thus far refused to post any Russian propaganda images, symbols, or videos widely circulated on social media by other elites.
Rather than posting the ‘Z’ signs that have become synonymous with Kremlin propaganda in support of the’special military operation’ in Ukraine, Ksenia has instead posted photos and videos of herself with her daughter Milana and has avoided directly addressing the conflict.
The video suggests she is concerned about the carnage unleashed by her father’s armed forces, though it is unclear whether the colour coordination was purely coincidental or a public relations ploy in light of the outpouring of rage she has received online.
Ksenia, a high-flier in Russia’s financial industry, continues to use Instagram despite the fact that her father’s government has labelled it “extremist” and blocked access to it on the Russian web.
Ksenia admitted in a recent social media post that the war had changed her life, but she did not express outright support for her father’s military incursion into the neighbouring country.
‘Life became divided into ‘before’ and ‘after,’ she admitted.
‘Any military action is a last resort, and it means we didn’t have another way out,’ she said weakly, without explaining why the invasion, which her father denied would happen in a face-to-face meeting with British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace on 11 February, was unavoidable.
‘I am not ashamed of my Russian heritage.’
I adore my motherland and its people, wherever they may be found.
‘Today the entire ”civilised” world showed they have one set of standards for themselves, and a completely different one for us,’ she said, in relation to the crippling sanctions levied against Russia and the outpouring of social media hatred.
‘I will keep working and will keep doing what I can – to help, to support those in need, to love and to take care of my family and relatives.’
She proudly captioned a photo of herself and her baby daughter Milana, who were dressed in Ukrainian flag colours, ‘We are half a year old today!’
Despite the colour scheme, the post elicited a flood of anti-war comments.
‘The mothers of Ukraine beg you to please stop the war,’ said one from the country her father is invading.
‘You’re a mother!!!!’ Can you imagine how our mothers feel when their children are killed by bombs and bullets? ‘How could you do this to us?’
‘Death to your father!’ said another message.
She was told: ‘Some babies in Ukraine will never turn six months old, because your father took them to their graves.
‘Be damned. Your children and grandchildren will pay for the mistakes of their fathers.’
