The royal family is bound by a set of regulations, particularly when it comes to what they were.

Camilla, the Duchess of Cambridge, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice all have a long list of dos and don’ts that they must follow when attending royal occasions, and Meghan Markle had the same during her brief time in The Firm.

There are also restrictions on what their children, including George, Charlotte, and Louis, can wear, and there is a particularly grim condition that they always take a black clothing abroad in case someone dies.

However, according to MyLondon, there is one rule that reveals which members are married and which are single.

Royals should always wear hats or headpieces in public until 6 p.m., according to royal tradition. After this, married women should exchange their caps for tiaras.

Unmarried royal ladies, however, are not permitted to do so, regardless of whether they are royal or engaged.

Women are able to wear their first tiaras as soon as they marry, even on their wedding day.

As many will know, Kate wore her first tiara for her wedding to Prince William, despite royal etiquette stating that tiaras should only be worn in the evening. On their wedding days, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie also donned their first tiaras.

Diana Mather, a senior tutor with the etiquette consultancy The English Manner, previously spoke to the internationl media about these guidelines and what they signify.

She said tiaras are seen as a sign of status and showed “you were not looking for a husband”.

“The old rule is that hats are never worn indoors after 6pm, because that is when the ladies changed into evening dress, and tiaras and the family jewels would come out,” she said.

“Flashy diamonds and tiaras are not worn during the day, and only married ladies wear tiaras.”
