The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sent out an important celebration message on Monday morning, only hours after they were conspicuously absent from the BAFTAs the night before.

As their official account posted, William and Kate wished their Twitter fans a happy Commonwealth Day.

“2.5 billion citizens, 54 member countries. Wishing a very happy #CommonwealthDay to you all” the tweet read alongside a host of Commonwealth country flags.

Fans from all around the world responded to their tweet, including those from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Trinidad & Tobago.

The Commonwealth, which consists of 54 countries, is led by William’s grandmother, the Queen. Later that day, the Cambridges will attend the traditional Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in London, along with the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Princess Alexandra.

The Queen had hoped to attend, but she is no longer able to do so from her palace in Windsor. The decision has been seen as a preventative and practical action, rather than a new health issue for the 95-year-old king, who has recently recovered from coronavirus.
