Pakistan’s total debt rises 13.5% to Rs40.28 trillion

KARACHI: The total debt of the country has increased 13.5 per cent, or Rs4.78 trillion, to Rs40.28 trillion by the end of October 2021, compared with Rs35.5 trillion a year ago.

According to the statistics released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Monday, of the total debt, the federal government’s domestic debt increased 10.6 per cent during the period under review.

The federal government’s domestic debt was at Rs26.47 trillion by the end of October 2021, compared with Rs23.94 billion by the end of the same month last year.

The long-term debt of the federal government’s domestic debt rose to Rs20 trillion by October 2021, compared with Rs18.9 trillion a year ago.

Meanwhile, for the short-term loans, including market treasury bills, the debt increased to Rs6.41 trillion by October 2021, compared with Rs5.03 trillion a year ago.

However, the external debt posted an increase of 19.4 per cent during the period. The external debt grew to Rs13.81 trillion by October 2021, compared with Rs11.57 trillion a year ago.
