Supreme Court rejects FBR’s appeals against Kulsoom Nawaz, Shehbaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday rejected the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) appeals against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif.

The appeals were heard by the apex court’s two-member bench comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah.

In the appeal, the country’s top tax collecting authority claimed that Kulsoom and Shehbaz did not pay the wealth tax levied on them between 1994 and 1998.

However, the apex court said that Shehbaz and Kulsoom had paid their wealth tax during the period.

The Supreme Court also noted that the FBR had issued notices to Kulsoom and Shahbaz but did not serve them a demand notice.

The court while rejecting the FBR’s appeals noted that the FBR had also failed to prove that it had sent the demand notices.

In the last hearing, the FBR was given the last chance to submit proof of notices which could show additional taxes levied on Kulsoom and Shehbaz.

Earlier, the Lahore High Court had also rejected the FBR petition and remarked in judgment that FBR failed to submit a record of notices for additional tax.
