Things that occur on TikTok should remain on TikTok. Trying out popular TikTok dances may be entertaining, allowing us to experience a sense of liberation and carefree playfulness that we would not normally allow ourselves to experience.
It’s also a lot of fun to share TikToks with the people who will appreciate them the most, by dropping the links in your group conversations like tiny presents.
What’s less enjoyable is when these two seemingly innocent pursuits combine, and your mother witnesses you dropping it low to Erica Banks’ “Buss It.”
When you share a TikTok video, the app offers your account profile to everyone who clicks on the link, regardless of where it was shared.
While this feature is beneficial if you want to grow a large following on TikTok, it is less than ideal for individuals who want their TikTok activity to stay on TikTok.
Fortunately, there is a technique to prevent TikTok from humiliating you in front of people you have to see in person. When you post a link on TikTok, it will propose that others follow your account. Here’s how to block TikTok from proposing that people follow your account.
TikTok is now open.
To access your account profile, tap the profile icon in the bottom right corner. In the upper right corner, tap the hamburger symbol (“). This will take you to your “Privacy and Settings” menu.
To access your privacy settings, touch “Privacy” under the “Account” category.
Look for “Suggest your account to others” under the “Discoverability” section and tap on it.
You’ll be led to a menu with a number of toggles that let you customize how people can locate your account. Turn off “People who open or send links to you.”
Once you’ve done that, copying and emailing a TikTok link to a loved one will no longer expose you.
While you’re at it, check your other discoverability settings to make sure no one can locate you through your phone contacts, Facebook, or mutual connections. If you want to keep your faltering attempts at TikTok stardom away from your normal life, this is certainly a smart idea.
Once you’ve done that, copying and emailing a TikTok link to a loved one will no longer expose you.
