Lahore: PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah has been elected as a senator from the Punjab Assembly in the by-election for a vacant Senate seat. The unofficial and unconfirmed results show that he secured an overwhelming majority.
Polling continued smoothly throughout the day and ended at 4 p.m. Two polling booths were set up in the assembly hall, where 251 members cast their votes. Rana Sanaullah received 250 votes, while one vote was rejected.
Sources said Rana Sanaullah had the support of 263 members, far above the required 181 votes to win. Opposition parties had already announced a boycott of the election, which left the contest one-sided.
Deputy Opposition Leader Moin Qureshi declared that no opposition member would take part in the by-election, warning that any vote cast would count as a violation of party policy.
Punjab Assembly has a total of 371 seats, with 363 members currently present, as eight seats remain vacant. The party position stands as follows:
- PML-N 229
- PPP 16, IPP 7
- PML-Q 11,
- Sunni Ittehad Council 73
- PTI 24
- One seat each for TLP, PML-Zia, and MWM.
The Senate seat became vacant after PTI’s Ejaz Chaudhry lost his seat due to his conviction in the May 9 cases. Given the ruling alliance’s clear majority, Rana Sanaullah’s victory was seen as certain from the start.
