Devastation in Balochistan: Monsoon Floods Claim 22 Lives

QUETTA: The ongoing monsoon spell has brought widespread devastation across Balochistan, with at least 22 lives lost, according to a new report released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).  The victims include 13 women and four children, with deaths resulting from drowning, collapsing structures, electrocution, and flash floods. The report also confirms that 11 people sustained injuries during the deadly spell of heavy rains and flooding.

The relentless monsoon rains have wreaked havoc on the province’s infrastructure. The Bibi Nani Bridge in Bolan suffered severe damage due to flash flooding, forcing the closure of the Quetta Sibi highway and halting all vehicular traffic in the area. The PDMA report outlines the extent of destruction across multiple districts, where floodwaters have submerged roads, swept away vehicles, and destroyed homes.

In Zhob, a family’s vehicle was swept away by rising waters, resulting in the tragic deaths of three women and a child. In Ziarat, three women drowned in a dam, while in Musakhel and Kohlu, two children died from electrocution during the torrential rains.

Property damage has been equally severe. The PDMA reports that 83 houses were affected, including 14 completely destroyed and 69 partially damaged. Additionally, 357 solar panels were washed away, and four government buildings sustained damage. In Khuzdar, six people, including three children, lost their lives due to wall collapses and flash flooding.

Tragedy also struck Duki and Harnai, where four girls and two children were killed after being swept away by floodwaters or crushed under collapsed roofs. Meanwhile, in Pandran, Kalat, severe flash flooding has inundated homes, schools, and streets, forcing local authorities to launch emergency relief operations.

District administrations across the province are actively working to assess the full scale of the destruction, as rescue and relief efforts continue in affected regions. The PDMA has warned that more rainfall may worsen conditions, urging residents especially those in low-lying areas to exercise caution.

This deadly monsoon spell has underscored the vulnerability of remote areas in Balochistan to extreme weather events, sparking calls for stronger disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience in the region.

Multiple lightning strikes during recent rainfall in the Thar Desert have resulted in the deaths of 23 livestock near Nangar Parkar.

The incidents occurred in the villages of Mithrio Halepota, Rojh, and Danbhario, where lightning killed 21 cows and two goats.

This is not an isolated incident. on the other side, similar events near Mithi and Islamkot resulted in the deaths of 17 and 47 animals, respectively. The Health Department has issued an advisory urging the public to avoid open fields during thunderstorms.
