Children and women among 570 killed in Karachi traffic tragedies

KARACHI: The city’s roads continue to turn into death traps as traffic accidents have claimed 570 lives in just 227 days of 2025.

Rescue officials revealed alarming statistics, stating that 173 people lost their lives specifically in accidents involving heavy traffic vehicles.

In the past 36 hours alone, a series of tragic accidents across Karachi claimed 10 more lives, including a couple, their two daughters, and a young boy.

According to the data, the victims this year include 439 men, 55 women, and 76 children, underscoring the widespread scale of the tragedy.

Breakdown of fatalities by vehicle type shows the following: buses: 25 deaths, mini-buses: 11 deaths, coaches: 6 deaths, trailers: 65 deaths, trucks: 62 deaths and dumpers: 34 deaths, water tankers: 44 deaths and Oil tankers: 6 deaths.

Police authorities confirmed that motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable group, followed by pedestrians, and then passengers or drivers of smaller vehicles.

Experts attribute the rising death toll to reckless driving, poor enforcement of traffic regulations, and the unchecked movement of heavy vehicles around the clock on city roads.
