Career Highlights:

Tricia McLaughlin is best known for her exploration of fantasy architecture and imagined spaces. After earning her BFA from Syracuse University, she volunteered for the Peace Corps from 1987 to 1989 in Uvita de Osa, Costa Rica, where she led women’s development and literacy programs, and even helped launch the area’s first women’s football league.

After returning to the U.S., she relocated to New York City, working as a scenic artist for theater and fashion while teaching herself computer graphics. She later pursued a Master’s in Fine Arts at Hunter College, completing her degree in Combined Media in 2000, and soon after participated in a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts.

Just two years after finishing her degree, McLaughlin held her first solo exhibition at Florence Lynch Gallery in Manhattan, followed by other notable group and solo shows in Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and New York galleries like White Box and Apexart. Her work often features surreal environments and stylized characters such as apes and simplified archetypes.

In 2005, she was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for her pioneering work in 3D design, animation, and sculptural architecture. Her animated short History of the World was featured in the 2009 Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale in South Korea. In 2010, she presented her series What’s She Building in There? at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts.

One of her largest works is a nine-by-ninety-foot video installation commissioned by the Virginia Beach Convention Center, based on her project SeeWorld, exploring human attempts to rationalize and control the natural flow of water.
