Kim Kardashian is facing a lawsuit after mistakenly using a New York man’s photo instead of a death row inmate’s in a social media post. The mix-up involved two individuals named Ivan Cantu, leading to unintended consequences for the wrongly identified man.
Before the Texas inmate’s execution, Kardashian, an advocate for criminal justice reform, shared an Instagram post condemning the death penalty. However, instead of using the prisoner’s photo, she accidentally posted an image of Ivan Cantu, a project manager from Westchester. With millions of followers, the post quickly gained attention.
Cantu, the project manager, has now sued Kardashian in Los Angeles Superior Court, claiming he has suffered “hatred, contempt, and/or ridicule” as a result. He also alleged the incident caused him “anxiety and emotional distress.” His lawyer, Greg Sobo, criticized Kardashian’s actions, saying, “For too long, we have seen social media cause devastating injuries to innocent victims.”
Though Kardashian’s team removed the post “almost immediately” after realizing the mistake, Cantu’s lawyer argued that the damage was already done. “Mr. Cantu’s privacy was destroyed at a most critical and sensitive time,” Sobo stated, adding that they attempted to contact Kardashian’s team before filing the lawsuit.
