Former South African captain AB de Villiers is set to make his highly anticipated return to cricket after nearly four years.

On Tuesday, the legendary cricketer confirmed his comeback, announcing that he will captain the Game Changers South Africa Champions in the second season of the World Championship of Legends (WCL).

The WCL is a prestigious T20 tournament that brings together retired and non-contracted cricket stars, providing fans with a chance to watch some of the game’s greatest players in action once again.

De Villiers’ announcement has ignited excitement among cricket enthusiasts, eager to witness the dynamic and fearless batsman grace the field once more.

Reflecting on his decision to return to cricket, de Villiers said, “Four years ago, I retired from all cricket because I just didn’t feel the urge to play anymore. Well, time has passed, and my young sons have started playing the game.”

“We’ve been playing more and more often in the garden, and, well, it feels as though some kind of flame has been lit again. So I am heading back to the gym and the nets, and I’ll be ready for WCL in July,” he added.

His return is expected to bring renewed energy and enthusiasm to the Game Changers squad. The team, which previously showcased iconic players like Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Dale Steyn, and Imran Tahir during its inaugural season, now looks poised for a promising future under de Villiers’ leadership.

It is worth noting that the second edition of the WCL is scheduled for July this year.

The prolific South African batter is regarded as a modern-day legend, accumulating 8,765 runs in Tests at an impressive average of 50.66. He ranks as South Africa’s fourth-highest run-scorer in the format, with 22 centuries to his name.

As a former captain, he also excelled in ODIs, amassing 9,577 runs at an outstanding average of 53.50.
