Sindh districts report polio virus in sewage samples

Poliovirus has been found in sewage samples from Mirpurkhas, Thatta, and Naushahro Feroze districts in Sindh. The samples were collected on December 23 and 24 and tested positive for Wild Poliovirus Type 1.

In 2024, over 480 sewage samples tested positive for poliovirus across the country. Pakistan has been struggling to eliminate polio, with 73 cases reported last year.

The National Institute of Health’s Polio Eradication Lab recently confirmed a new polio case in a female child from D.I. Khan, with symptoms starting on December 31, 2024. This brought D.I. Khan’s total to 11 cases in 2024.

Out of the 72 wild poliovirus cases reported nationwide last year, 27 were from Balochistan, 22 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 21 from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
