Is Dune 4 coming? Here’s what we know about Warner Bros’ next move

  • The film director plans to step away after completing “Dune: Messiah”.
  • Villeneuve is not interested in adapting later novels in Herbert’s six-part series due to their increasing complexity.
  • Villeneuve’s “Dune: Messiah” is set to begin filming this year, with a tentative release date planned for 2026.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are reportedly preparing to expand the Dune universe, building on Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed movies. Villeneuve is currently concentrating solely on directing “Dune: Messiah”.

Denis Villeneuve, who achieved great success with “Dune” and its sequel, “Dune: Part Two”, has stated that he will step away after completing “Dune: Messiah”, the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s second book. According to “World of Reel”, sources close to the production reveal that Villeneuve is not particularly interested in adapting the later novels in Herbert’s six-part series, citing their increasing obscurity and complexity.

Rumors suggest that Warner Bros. is eager to expand the “Dune” saga with additional movies and a sequel TV series, potentially extending the universe beyond Denis Villeneuve’s original vision. An insider close to the director reports that Villeneuve feels frustrated by these plans, which allegedly include adaptations of “Children of Dune” and “God Emperor of Dune”.

Despite this, the studios seem determined to capitalize on the “Dune’ franchise for years to come, potentially expanding Herbert’s intricate works to maximize both cinematic and streaming potential. While the studio’s streaming series “Dune: Prophecy” did not achieve the same level of success as Villeneuve’s films, it still garnered decent viewership, fueling the studio’s ambitions. Industry insiders believe that Warner Bros. is likely planning at least one more movie in the franchise, along with a second TV series.

The first two movies in the “Dune” franchise have garnered both critical acclaim and box-office success. Villeneuve’s “Dune: Messiah” is set to begin filming this year, with a tentative release date planned for 2026. While Villeneuve’s “Dune” films have revitalized Herbert’s world with brilliant narratives and star-studded casts — including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, and more — fans of the franchise have even more to look forward to.
