WhatsApp Rolls Out Upgrades for Calls and On-Device Translation

WhatsApp has introduced several improvements to its calling capabilities across mobile and desktop platforms.

On mobile, users can now select specific participants for group calls, preventing unnecessary notifications to other members of the group. Additionally, ten new video call effects have been launched, providing a more interactive and engaging experience for users.

For desktop users, the app now allows calls to be initiated more easily through the calls tab by starting a call, creating a call link, or directly dialing a number. High-resolution video support for one-on-one and group video calls has also been introduced, enhancing communication quality.

WhatsApp is also working on expanding its translation features with a new tool for translating channel updates into multiple languages. This builds on the message translation feature introduced earlier this year.

As reported by WABetaInfo, this upcoming feature was spotted in version 2.24.26.9 of the WhatsApp beta for Android. Currently under development and unavailable to beta users, screenshots suggest that users will have a toggle option to translate both channel updates and chat messages.

The on-device translation feature prioritizes privacy, working without an internet connection. However, users must download language packs, which could lead to slightly less accurate translations.

Initially, the feature will support six languages: English, Hindi, Russian, Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese, with plans for expansion in the future.

While a release date for the translation feature is yet to be announced, WhatsApp has already started rolling out the enhanced calling updates. These new features aim to make communication easier and more accessible across diverse settings.
