- Panday moved to Bangladesh and found success in its film industry.
- He aimed to win the hearts of the younger generation with his films, which continued in the “Housefull” sequels.
Chunky Panday, who debuted in the 80s, quickly gained popularity through his roles in multi-starters but faded from the spotlight as new stars emerged in the 90s. Recently, the actor revealed that he chose to star in films like Akshay Kumar’s “Housefull” to reinvest in his career and make a successful comeback, marking a shift from the roles he played early on.
In a recent interview, Chunky Panday recalled how the arrival of stars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and Shah Rukh Khan shifted the momentum in the Hindi film industry, causing his popularity to fade. Having primarily worked in multi-starrers, he struggled to maintain his presence and admitted, “My honeymoon phase lasted just one year.”
He moved to Bangladesh and found success in its film industry. However, when he returned to Hindi cinema, one incident made him shift his focus, prompting him to aim at impressing the younger generation.
Recalling the same, he said, “A small boy came and asked if I was a hero. I told him to ask his mother about me. But then I realized I had to win that kid’s heart with my films. I wanted to appeal to children. That is why I did films like Housefull, etc.…”
Unlike his previous roles, the audience loved seeing Chunky Panday in a new comedic avatar, which continued in the ”Housefull” sequels and became memorable to fans.
Panday shared that he hadn’t earned much money before rising to fame in Bollywood. In the ’70s and ’80s, an actor’s success was measured by the number of films they did, so they didn’t know how to slow down or choose the right scripts—a practice that has become common today. However, he admitted that other actors were smarter in this regard and managed to sustain their careers.
The actor has truly enjoyed his experience in the film industry, despite facing financial difficulties and various challenges along the way. He has no regrets about his journey and believes that actors should set aside their egos and be bold in their pursuit of success.
Chunky Panday, known for his role in “Vijay 69”, also recalled a time when he hit rock bottom and faced a severe financial crunch. He had to seek help during that period. “It was 1996, and some of my money was tied up in a real estate deal. I threw a party at the time, but I didn’t even have money to buy alcohol for it. I had to call my friend and ask for help,” shared Chunky.
On the work front, Chunky Panday recently appeared in Anupam Kher’s “Vijay 69”. He is currently shooting for Sajid Nadiadwala’s much-awaited “Housefull 5, ” which co-stars Fardeen Khan, Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, and Abhishek Bachchan.
