Shaheen Shah Afridi Replaced as Top ODI Bowler, Rashid Khan Claims No.1 Spot

  • Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan’s top bowler, has been replaced by Afghanistan’s leg-spinner Rashid Khan.
  • South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj remains the third-ranked ODI bowler.
  • Shaheen was rested from Pakistan’s ongoing ODI series against Zimbabwe.

DUBAI: Pakistan’s star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has been dethroned as the top-ranked bowler in the ICC Men’s ODI Bowling Rankings, with Afghanistan’s leg-spinner Rashid Khan taking the top spot in the latest update on Wednesday.

South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj retained his position as the third-ranked ODI bowler. Shaheen, who previously rose to the top after taking eight wickets at an average of 12.62 in Pakistan’s historic series win against Australia, is currently rested from the ongoing series against Zimbabwe.

Haris Rauf, Shaheen’s bowling partner and Player of the Series in Pakistan’s 2-1 win over Australia, also saw a decline, dropping two places to 15th in the rankings.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s emerging opener Saim Ayub made a massive leap in the batting rankings after his spectacular century in Pakistan’s 10-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the second ODI. Ayub jumped 80 spots to 90th, while the batting charts continue to be led by Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam.

In the Test bowling rankings, India’s Jasprit Bumrah reclaimed the top spot after guiding his team to a commanding 295-run win over Australia in the opening Test of their five-match series in Perth. Bumrah’s match figures of 8/72 earned him a career-best 883 rating points, the highest by an Indian pacer in Test history.

Bumrah surpassed Australia’s Josh Hazlewood and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada to achieve this feat. Only Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (904) and Ravindra Jadeja (899) have recorded higher ratings than Bumrah in Test cricket.

On the batting side, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal climbed to a career-best second position, behind England’s Joe Root, after a stunning century in the Test. Veteran batter Virat Kohli also advanced nine places to secure 13th position following his stellar performance.
