Unidentified gunmen free PTI prisoners as jail vans attacked in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Unidentified gunmen attacked jail vans at the Sangjani Toll Plaza, successfully freeing several prisoners affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) who were facing terrorism charges.

According to reports, the assailants broke the windows of two vans carrying around 100 prisoners, mostly from Attock Jail, as confirmed by police. Several high-profile PTI detainees managed to escape during the assault.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi stated that approximately 18 to 20 attackers, including the son of a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa MPA, ambushed three prisoner vans transporting 82 inmates.

He added that the police thwarted the attack, recapturing the escaped prisoners and arresting three attackers. The vans were returning from a court appearance when they were ambushed near the Sangjani Toll Plaza.

The situation has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of detainees in transit, as well as the effectiveness of police protection in high-risk scenarios.
