• Poland’s foreign ministry announced the release of Polish students arrested in Nigeria 
• The students were reportedly present near the protest, not flag-waving.
• The protests have raised concerns about increased Russian activity in Western Africa.

On Wednesday, Warsaw’s foreign ministry announced that Nigeria had released a group of Polish students who were previously arrested. Earlier this month, Nigeria had reported the arrest of seven Polish nationals for displaying Russian flags during anti-government protests in Kano, a northern state.

After their arrest, a spokesperson from the Polish foreign ministry denied the accusation of flag waving and stated that the students were simply present near the protest.

“The Polish students have been released and are in Kano,” the Polish foreign ministry said in a post on social media platform X. “Thank you to everyone involved in the release of the Polish citizens!“

Since August 1, hundreds of thousands of Nigerians have protested against President Bola Tinubu’s harsh economic reforms, which include ending some fuel and electricity subsidies, devaluing the currency, and facing inflation that has reached a three-decade high.

Protesters waved Russian flags during demonstrations in northern states, highlighting growing concerns about increased Russian activity in Western Africa.
