  • Greek coastguard rescues 75 migrants from a shipwreck in the Mediterranean.
  • Migrants were on a sailboat southwest of Pylos, to be taken to Kalamata.
  • The trawler, carrying over 750 people, sank in June 2023.

On Tuesday, the Greek coastguard announced that it had rescued 75 migrants in an area where one of the Mediterranean’s worst migrant shipwrecks occurred last year.

The coastguard said they were on board a sailboat southwest of the Peloponnese coastal town of Pylos and would be taken to the port of Kalamata. The coastguard did not mention the migrants’ nationalities or the sailboat’s port of origin.

In June 2023, a rusty and overloaded trawler, sailing from Tobruk in Libya and believed to be carrying over 750 people, sank southwest of Pylos. Rescuers found 104 survivors, but more than 600 people are considered to have perished.

Dozens of survivors have filed a criminal complaint against the Greek coastguard, alleging that it took hours to respond despite warnings from the EU border agency Frontex and the NGO Alarm Phone.
