Iran denies allegations of involvement in plot to kill Donald Trump

  • Iran denies “malicious” accusations of plotting to kill former US president Donald Trump.
  • US authorities received intelligence about the plot weeks ago, leading to increased protection for Trump.
  • The US National Security Council has been tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials.

On Wednesday, Iran rejected what it called “malicious” accusations by US media implicating it in a plot to kill former US president Donald Trump. On Tuesday, a news source reported that US authorities received intelligence from a “human source” weeks ago regarding an alleged Iranian plot against the former president, prompting an increase in his protection. Other US outlets also reported the alleged plot.

CNN clarified that the alleged plot was not connected to Saturday’s shooting at a Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania, which resulted in injuries to the former president and the death of a supporter.

The US National Security Council stated that it had been “tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years” following Tehran’s retaliation threats for the 2020 killing of Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike in neighboring Iraq.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations labeled the accusations as “unsubstantiated and malicious.” Foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani stated that Iran “strongly rejects any involvement in the recent armed attack against Trump.” However, he added that Iran remains “determined to prosecute Trump over his direct role in the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani.” Soleimani, who headed the foreign operations arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and oversaw Iranian military operations across the Middle East, was killed in a drone strike ordered by Trump just outside Baghdad airport.
