At the same time, lightning in the eastern state of Bihar claimed the lives of at least 10 people, according to government officials. Government officials reported that intense monsoon storms battered India on Monday, flooding parts of the financial capital Mumbai, and claiming the lives of at least 10 people due to lightning strikes in the eastern state of Bihar. As a precautionary measure in response to warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) of “heavy to very heavy rainfall,” Mumbai’s city council ordered the closure of schools and colleges.

Monsoon rains across South Asia from June to September provide respite from the summer heat and are crucial for replenishing water supplies, but they also bring widespread death and destruction. Experts say climate change has exacerbated the problem, leading to an increase in fatal floods and landslides in recent years.

Assam’s Disaster Management Authority reported that floods have swamped the northeastern state, resulting in eight deaths in the last 24 hours. The death toll from the downpours since mid-May has reached 66. Authorities in the northern state of Uttarakhand issued warnings of heavy rain.

The ferocious storms also cause frequent lightning strikes. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, lightning strikes claimed nearly 3,000 lives across India in 2022.
