The final decision about the commencement of the holy month of Muharram, which marks the start of the new Islamic year, will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad will preside over the committee’s meeting on Saturday, July 6, in Quetta to see the crescent of the first month of the new Islamic year.
Zonal committees of the Ruet-e-Hilal will also meet in different regions for the moon sighting.
Muharram 2024 Start Date in Pakistan
If the moon is sighted on July 6, the first Muharram in Pakistan will be observed on July 7. If not, the new Islamic year will start on July 8.
Ashura 2024 Date in Pakistan
Ashura is observed on the 9th and 10th of Muharram to remember the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala.
During Muharram, especially on Ashura, people hold processions and special gatherings across the country.
There are public holidays on Muharram 9 and 10 to mark Ashura with religious reverence. If Muharram starts on July 7, Ashura will be observed on July 15 and 16. If it starts on July 8, Ashura will be on July 16 and 17.
Security Arrangements
The Punjab Home Department has issued security guidelines for Muharram processions and gatherings across the province.
Designated entrance and exit routes will be established, and walk-through gates will be installed at all sensitive locations. In Sindh, the provincial government has banned pillion riding for the first ten days of Muharram for security reasons.
