Shaheen Afridi, the fast bowler from Pakistan, expressed that India was the rightful champion of the T20 World Cup 2024, citing their performance in the final against South Africa in Barbados on Saturday.
The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, edged out the Proteas by 7 runs, clinching their second T20 World Cup title after a 17-year hiatus.
“I watched the match and enjoyed it and both the teams played well. On the day whichever team handles the pressure wins,” Shaheen conveyed to reporters in London.
“India played a good brand of cricket and deserved to win,” he continued.
Afridi highlighted the necessity for Pakistan to address their weaknesses following their early exit from the World Cup.
“Strong teams compete in the World Cup and they come after going through a process. I think we need to correct few things and if we work hard, results will be with us,” he remarked.
Notably, the T20 World Cup 2024 Team of the Tournament features six players from India. Rohit Sharma leads the team, with the Player of the Tournament Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, and Axar Patel also included.
From Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rashid Khan, and Fazalhaq Farooqi made the team.
Completing the eleven are Nicholas Pooran from the West Indies and Marcus Stoinis from Australia, with South Africa’s Anrich Nortje serving as the 12th man.
