Tamayo Perry, a skilled surfer and actor from Hawaii, tragically passed away on June 23, 2024, following a fatal shark attack near Goat Island, Oahu. Perry, aged 49, was well-known for his role in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and his stunts in “Blue Crush,” “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” and ABC’s “Lost.”
Perry was a professional surfer from the North Shore with a career spanning over 25 years. He began surfing at nine, ultimately mastering some of the world’s most challenging waves, including the famed Pipeline. His significant achievement came in 1999 when he won the Pipeline Master trials, leading to his participation in the Teahupoo, Tahiti Trials.
Beyond his surfing prowess, Perry joined the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety Department as a lifeguard in July 2016, earning respect and admiration within the community. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry a “legendary waterman” and expressed that his death is “a tragic loss.”
On June 23, 2024, around 1 p.m. local time, authorities responded to reports of a shark attack near Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. Lifeguards brought Perry to shore by jet ski, but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Perry is survived by his wife, Emilia, an adept bodyboarder. Together, they founded the Oahu Surfing Experience in 2016, sharing their passion for surfing with others. Perry’s contributions to the surfing community and his commitment to promoting surf safety and etiquette will be long remembered.
