RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government has decided to revive the “layer poultry farming” initiative initially launched by Shehbaz Sharif in 2016 during his tenure as chief minister.

The program, which was continued by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government, was halted in 2022 following the removal of Imran Khan’s administration through a vote of no confidence.

Under this poultry subsidy scheme, registered citizens were provided with a set of five hens and one rooster, with a thirty percent subsidy. Punjab’s Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Dairy Development, Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, announced the restart of distributing egg-laying hens to farmers at subsidized rates during his visit to the Rawalpindi Poultry Research Institute.

Kirmani stressed the importance of increasing the poultry population to meet the province’s egg demand. He affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and promoting the poultry sector, aiming to enhance egg production and reduce production costs for farmers, thereby lowering egg prices for consumers.

In addition to instructing the institute to implement nutritional programs, improve breeding practices, and boost the number of egg-laying hens, Kirmani emphasized the necessity for ongoing research and development in the poultry industry to ensure its sustained growth and progress.
