  • Australia defeated Namibia by 9 wickets in T20I match.
  • Australia qualified for Super 8 stage.
  • Zampa was named Player of the Match.

Australia decisively defeated Namibia by nine wickets at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, on Wednesday.

With a modest target of 73 runs, Australia swiftly achieved victory in just 5.4 overs, thereby securing their place in the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

David Wiese claimed the only wicket for Namibia, dismissing David Warner, who had scored a quick 20 off 8 balls.

Travis Head remained not out, scoring an impressive 34 runs off 17 balls, including five fours and two sixes.

Earlier in the match, Australia had chosen to bowl first and managed to dismiss Namibia for a mere 72 runs.

Adam Zampa, the Australian leg-spinner, made history by becoming the first Australian male cricketer to take 100 wickets in T20I cricket, with impressive figures of 4-12 in four overs.

“To get the win tonight and qualify for the Super Eights, that is a nice feeling,” Zampa expressed after being named Player of the Match.

“I bowled a couple of pies tonight but in general, the ball feels like it is coming out well. Being encouraged to pick up wickets in the middle, particularly by the captain.

“We are happy, it is the first step in trying to take the trophy home but a long way to go.”

Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood took two wickets for 18 runs in four overs, contributing to Australia’s dominance with the ball. Marcus Stoinis also added to Namibia’s woes by taking a couple of wickets, leading to Namibia being all out in 17 overs.

Namibia’s captain, Gerhard Erasmus, who took 17 balls to score his first run, ended up as the top scorer with 36 runs off 43 balls, including four fours and a six.

Besides Erasmus, Michael van Lingen was the only other batter to reach double figures, scoring 10 runs.

This was the first official T20I between Australia and Namibia. However, they had previously faced each other in a warm-up match prior to this tournament, where Australia had secured a comfortable seven-wicket victory.
