Minister of State for Power Ali Pervaiz Malik clarified recent discussions regarding Pakistan’s solar system and net metering policies. Malik affirmed that the government has not enforced a ban on net metering and currently has no intention to reconsider the policy. Any potential modifications will be decided after extensive consultations.

No Tax on Solar Systems in Pakistan

Malik also stated that there has been no decision regarding taxes on solar systems. He highlighted the government’s dedication to supporting alternative energy initiatives, including renewable energy projects, to strengthen the economy and tackle existing challenges. The minister cautioned against negative political strategies, noting that they would be revealed.

Concerns emerged following Energy Minister Awais Leghari’s mention of a potential review of the net metering policy. During a press conference, Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari acknowledged the existing issues with solar net metering.

Leghari pointed out that previously, individuals installing solar systems could recoup their investment in three years. However, with enhanced efficiency and incentives, they now recover their investment in just one to one and a half years. The PML-N-led government, which had advocated for solarization in 2017, now celebrates 113,000 connections on net meters,

Leghari confirmed the government’s willingness to review the solar net metering policy if needed but stressed their support for its continuation. He also emphasized the government’s dedication to combating power theft to lessen the financial strain on the national exchequer.
