The Punjab government has announced an early start to summer vacations for schools, beginning on May 25, due to predictions of heatwaves across the province.
A notification stated, “In view of the surge in temperature and heatwave in the proivince, all public and private schools shall remain closed for seven days with effect from 25th May 2024 to 31st May 2024.
Normally scheduled to begin on June 1 and last until August 14, this year’s summer break will start early due to the additional heatwave-related holidays. Schools will reopen on August 15 after a 2.5-month summer break.
The decision follows the Meteorological Office’s prediction of heatwave conditions due to high pressure in the upper atmosphere, particularly affecting Punjab and Sindh from May 21, with severe heatwave conditions expected from May 23 to 27.
Temperatures are forecasted to be 4 to 6°C above normal from May 21 to 23, and 6 to 8°C above normal from May 23 to 27 in Sindh and Punjab.
