  • Joel Cauchi is a 40-year-old English tutor from Queensland, Australia.
  • He was identified as the suspect in a stabbing incident at Bondi shopping mall.
  • The incident resulted in six deaths and 12 injuries, including a 9-month-old child and her mother.

Joel Cauchi, a 40-year-old English tutor from Queensland, Australia, was identified as the suspect in a tragic stabbing incident at Bondi shopping mall on April 13, resulting in the loss of six lives and injuries to 12 others, including a 9-month-old child and her mother, Ash Good, who later passed away in hospital.

New South Wales police confirmed Cauchi as the perpetrator of the stabbings. Inspector Amy Scott, nearby during the incident, bravely confronted Cauchi and shot him when he attempted to attack her with a knife.

Cauchi’s fascination with knives was well-known, prompting his parents, when they resided with him in Toowoomba, Queensland, to confiscate his knives due to concerns about his obsession.

Having recently relocated from Queensland to Sydney, Cauchi had a history of schizophrenia. Authorities are investigating whether he exhibited signs of targeting women prior to the attack.

Cauchi’s family contacted Queensland Police after recognizing him in footage of the incident. Queensland officers have been in communication with the family, who last interacted with Cauchi in March.

Unemployed and lacking a permanent address, Cauchi lived in various locations, including Brisbane, Kangaroo Point, Carina, the Gold Coast, and with his family in south Queensland before moving to Sydney.

Despite publicly presenting himself as an English tutor on social media, Cauchi was leading a double life, engaging on escort websites such as Australia Cracker, Empire Escorts, and Escorts Australia as a male escort, offering explicit services.

His online profiles, established around June 2023, were later removed from the websites following his demise.

Cauchi’s online presence portrayed him as an English tutor on Facebook, where he shared updates about his hobbies, including surfing and gun shooting. He engaged in various Facebook groups, seeking companionship and sharing his interests.

However, his online activities received backlash from the public following confirmation of his identity by the police.

Reports suggested Cauchi struggled with schizophrenia, contributing to the complexity of his circumstances.
