  • Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s prison sentence was reduced to six months.
  • The reduction follows a conviction for illegal campaign financing during his 2012 re-election bid.
  • The ruling highlights Sarkozy’s continued scrutiny and legal challenges.

On Wednesday, a French appeal court decreased the prison sentence for former president Nicolas Sarkozy following his conviction for illegal campaign financing during his 2012 re-election bid.

He was initially sentenced to one year in prison by a lower court, Sarkozy’s sentence was reduced to six months behind bars by the Paris court of appeal, with another six months suspended.

The case stemmed from allegations that Sarkozy’s presidential campaign had exceeded the legal spending limit and had received illegal funding from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

While the conviction marks a significant legal setback for Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, the reduced sentence offers some reprieve. Sarkozy’s legal team had argued for leniency, citing his lack of prior convictions and his service to the country as president. Despite the reduction in prison time, the ruling highlights the continued scrutiny and legal challenges faced by Sarkozy, a prominent figure in French politics.
