Cadence Design Systems (CDNS.O) announced on Thursday the launch of its groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer system, the Millennium M1. This cutting-edge system is specifically designed for the simulation of airflow over jets and other mechanical gear, intensifying the rivalry with Ansys (ANSS.O) in the domain of physics simulation software.

While Cadence is renowned for its expertise in chip design software, it is now expanding its focus to seamlessly integrate chip design with applications used for designing and testing larger mechanical systems. This places Cadence in direct competition with Synopsys (SNPS.O), its primary rival, in the pursuit of comprehensive solutions for complex engineering challenges.

The Millennium M1 addresses the computational demands of physics simulation software, particularly in testing airflow and fluid dynamics. This type of simulation requires immense computing power, often causing engineers to face time constraints and struggle to meet business deadlines. Frank Ham, the Vice President of Research and Development for Computational Fluid Dynamics at Cadence, emphasized the significance of the new system in expediting tests, enabling engineers to conduct a more comprehensive analysis.

One of the key features of the Millennium M1 is its integration of artificial intelligence, which plays a crucial role in managing the vast amounts of data generated during simulations. The AI capabilities not only accelerate the analysis process but also provide valuable insights by recommending improvements that may have been overlooked by time-pressed engineers.

“There’s no human that’s reading all of the results of those simulations, and some of the design innovations that are buried in there are going be teased out,” explained Frank Ham.

The announcement comes amid the backdrop of Synopsys’ recent $35 billion acquisition deal with Ansys, a move that underscored the heightened competition in the industry. Cadence’s Millennium M1 aims to empower engineers by offering an efficient solution to overcome the challenges posed by the computational demands of physics simulations.

While Cadence has not disclosed the cost of the Millennium M1 system, it is set to offer both selling and rental options, catering to the diverse preferences of its customers. The system is available for purchase immediately, marking a significant milestone in Cadence’s quest to lead the AI-driven era of jet design software.
