Ukraine shoots down 8 Iranian drones in aimed Russian attack

  • Russia launched an attack on Ukraine.
  • No casualties or property damage was reported.
  • This follows Ukrainian airstrikes on oil storage facilities in Russia.

On Monday, Kiev announced that eight attack drones built in Iran had been used by Russian forces to assault the country, but that the attack had been repulsed by the country’s air defense systems.

Controlling the nation’s airspace is a top goal for Kyiv officials, who have pushed the West to provide more air defense systems.

“The enemy attacked with eight attack UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) of the Shahed-136/131 type from the Primorsko-Akhtarsk region of the Russian Federation,” the air force said in a statement.

It went on to say that defense systems in a number of Ukraine’s center and southern areas had shot down the drones.

No early reports of debris falling and causing damage were received.

The incident follows multiple airstrikes that targeted oil storage facilities in Russia’s border regions.

Some of those strikes have been attributed to Ukraine by security sector insiders, according to AFP, although both Kyiv and the Ukrainian military have kept quiet about attacks that have taken place inside of Russia.

Moscow announced on Sunday that there had been another fire at its energy infrastructure, this time at a gas terminal in the port of Ust-Luga on the Baltic Sea.
