WhatsApp is in the process of developing a Bluetooth file-sharing feature, allowing nearby users to share files of up to 2GB in size. This advancement was revealed in the latest WhatsApp for Android beta (version 2.24.2.20).

While the new capability is designed to simplify file transfers among WhatsApp users, it has the potential to create confusion and complications within Android’s recently introduced Quick Share experience.

Quick Share, previously known as Google’s Nearby Share feature, seeks to establish a cohesive wireless file-sharing system across various Android devices.

Unveiled by Google and Samsung at CES 2024, Quick Share aims to enable smooth file transfers between Android smartphones, Chromebooks, and Windows PCs, resembling Apple’s AirDrop ecosystem.

However, the simultaneous development of a Bluetooth-based file-sharing tool by WhatsApp may undermine the purpose of Quick Share, which aims to consolidate and streamline file-sharing capabilities on Android.

Users engaging in file transfers through WhatsApp will be required to access the new “Share Files” section within the app, deviating from the conventional system-level sharing menu.
