During their time together, they had four daughters named McKenna, Shayla, Skyla, and Emma. Mary Lou Retton disclosed their quiet separation during her participation in Dancing with the Stars, not revealing it to many except their family and close friends.
Kelley started attending the University of Texas, Austin, in 1985, and he joined the football team as a quarterback. While he didn’t play much in his first two years, he became the backup quarterback in his junior year and got the chance to play in some games. In his senior year, he was promoted to the starting role.
After finishing his studies at UT Austin, Kelley got a master’s degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. According to a press release from Houston Baptist University, he worked as a partner in an investment firm and a real estate developer in Houston before going back to his real love: football.
Kelley got back into football by becoming the quarterbacks coach at Fairmont State University in West Virginia, Retton’s hometown. He spent two years there, from 2009 to 2010, before moving to Pennsylvania Western University as the director of athletic fundraising and running backs coach.
In 2012, Kelley came back to Houston and took on a new role as the offensive assistant coach at Houston Baptist University.
Retton and Kelley got married in 1990, a year after they first met. Retton, who retired from gymnastics in 1986, joined UT Austin when Kelley was also a student there. They tied the knot right after completing their studies.
After five years of marriage, Retton and Kelley had their first daughter, Shayla. Shayla graduated from Baylor University in 2017 with a degree in health science. Despite being a gymnast in college, she didn’t continue with it after graduating. Shayla married Wyatt Schrepfer in January 2020 and has become passionate about bodybuilding, participating in various competitions since 2022.
Their second child, McKenna, was born in 1997 and followed in her mom’s gymnastics footsteps. She attended Louisiana State University, helping her team secure second place at the 2019 NCAA Gymnastics Championship.
Skyla, the third daughter born in 2000, graduated from Texas Tech University in 2023. Although not involved in gymnastics, she was a cheerleader in school.
The youngest in the family, Emma, was born in 2002. Currently attending the University of Arkansas, she is part of the gymnastics team.
Retton mentioned that she initially kept the separation private because she values her privacy. However, she eventually decided to open up about the challenges she was facing.
