Teachers continue boycott of classes in Punjab

LACHORE: Teachers continued protest demonstrations and boycott of classes across the Punjab province against the proposed privatization of government schools by the interim provincial government.

Due to teacher strikes and protests, classes have been suspended in government-run schools in several cities for 12 days.

Teachers have boycotted classes in all government educational institutions in urban and rural areas including Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Lodhran, Rajanpur, and Hafizabad.

It should be noted that cases were registered against more than 450 teachers who blocked the GT Road during the protest in Gujranwala yesterday and 15 teachers were also arrested for raiding their houses.

Pakistan, China call for ceasefire to end Israel-Palestine tension

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China expressed deep concern over the current escalation of tensions and violence between Palestine and Israel, and called for an immediate ceasefire.

In a joint statement issued at the conclusion of Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar’s visit to China, both sides reiterated that the fundamental way out of the conflict lied in implementing the “two-state solution and establishing an independent State of Palestine.”

The joint statement called for the cessation of hostilities and every possible effort to protect civilians and avert an even worse humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and to jointly upholding the international system with the United Nations at its core, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations underpinned by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

“Both sides stand for unity and cooperation of the international community, oppose hegemonism and power politics, adhere to true multilateralism, and promote humanity’s common values of The joint statement called for the cessation of hostilities and every possible effort to protect civilians and avert an even worse humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

ECP compiles new list of election symbols

ISLAMABAD:  The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has compiled a new list of election symbols in connection with the preparations for the general elections.

The Election Commission has allotted 144 election symbols to registered political parties, while 182 symbols have been allotted to independent candidates. The bat symbol for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is also included in the list.

The compiled electoral rolls were sent to the District Election Commissioners. The Election Commission has issued a directive to provide a level playing field to all political parties.

Commission had announced the freezing of all electoral rolls across the country on October 25. After October 25, voter registration and transfer will not be possible. The data of more than 800,000 people have been obtained from National Database & Registration Authority(NADRA) who are undergoing data entry to make them voters.

The spokesperson of ECP said that all these people will be able to vote in the upcoming general elections, only 10 days are left for registration of vote, transfer and data correction,  change and data correction can be done by October 25.

The Election Commission had directed to ensure the registration of votes of themselves and their families.

It should be remembered that the Election Commission had decided to unfreeze the voter lists on September 28 in preparation for the general elections. The voter lists were frozen on July 20, but later the Election Commission said that the voter lists would remain unfrozen till October 25, 2023, so that all eligible people can register their vote, cast votes, transfer and issue ID cards by October 25. The data may be corrected accordingly.
